Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and pathological pattern: on the predilection, the tendency, the clinical features in age, sex and location of the odontogenic cyst and neoplastic potentiality by the analysis of the
biopsy
cases, according to the new classification by J.J.Pindborg in 1981 with minor modification of the publication of the WHO histological classfication of the odontogenic tumors, jaw cysts, and allied lesions in 1971.
For this purpose total 336 cases of the odontogenic cyst were analyzed which were collected at the infirmary of dental school, Chosun University from January 1978 to December 1991.
@ES The attained results were as follow:
@EN 1. The radicular cyst showed the most frequent occurrence of 231 cases (68.75%). The followings were 90 cases (26.79%) of dentigerous cyst, 9 cases (2.68%) of primordial cyst, 5 cases (1.49%) of residual cyst, and 1 cases (0.3%) of calcifying
odontogenic cyst.
2. On the aspect of sex predilection, male was 208 cases (61.01%) and female was 128 cases (38.09%). The ratio between male to female was 1.6:1. And the occurrence rate of maxilla to mandible was 1.62:1. The mandibular molar region, and the
maxillary
anterior region had more cysts.
3. On the aspect of age distribution, the second decade revealed the highest occurrence. The average age of male was 31.95 years, female was 35.19 years, and the average age of both sex was 31.5 years on 336 cases.
4. It appeared that 10 cases of pseudostratified ciliated columnar lined epithelium revealed in odontogenic cyst occurred in maxilla.
5. It appeared that 12 cases of mural ameloblastoma (13.3%) were arising on the lining epithelium and 4 cases (4.4%) had potentiality to ameloblastoma in total 90 cases of dentigerous cyst.
6. It was noted that 5 cases (1.45%) showed epithelial dysplasia among total 336 cases of odontogenic cyst.
